A new report by the Inter-American Dialogue analyzes the challenges to environmentally and socially sustainable development of the oil and mining sectors in Colombia and raises important questions for policymakers, such as where extractive industries should be permitted to operate, who should be responsible for oversight and how to make operations more environmentally sustainable.
On February 15, the Inter-American Dialogue hosted an event titled “Piñera’s Second Term” to discuss the implications and challenges of president-elect Piñera’s second term. This event was moderated by Michael Shifter with speakers Robert Funk (Universidad de Chile), Gabrielle Trebat (McLarty Associates), and Sergio Urzua (University of Maryland). The speakers discussed the social, political, and economic implications of Piñera’s victory and forthcoming challenges.
On Wednesday, February 14th the Inter-American Dialogue’s Migration, Remittances & Development Program hosted a panel discussion concerning the political, economic, and social implications of ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Salvadorans. In January, 2018 the US government announced that it will not renew Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Salvadorans. This report will explore the consequences of this decision and offer several proposals for avoiding or mitigating the potential harm to Salvadorans currently protected by TPS.
