Brazil’s government is hiring artificial intelligence research organization OpenAI to help in the screening of lawsuits, according to the country’s solicitor general’s office, Reuters reported on June 11. What are the most innovative and effective ways that governments in Latin America and the Caribbean can use artificial intelligence? What are the potential pitfalls of the expanded use of artificial intelligence for governments and the people they serve, and how can they be mitigated? How much opportunity for investment exists in Latin America and the Caribbean for companies that provide services related to artificial intelligence?

For example, AI tools can improve public health by enhancing disease surveillance and optimizing resource allocation. AI-driven technology can streamline bureaucratic processes, increasing access to services and reducing corruption through fraud detection mechanisms. Urban management can benefit from AI through optimized traffic, energy and waste management, as well as improved disaster response strategies. However, the broader implementation of AI by governments may present potential challenges…”
