What Will Massa Do for Argentina’s Ruling Peronists?
Argentina’s ruling Peronist coalition on June 23 tapped current Economy Minister Sergio Massa as its candidate for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for October. At the same time, former Security Minister Patricia Bullrich and Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Larreta are seeking the nomination of the center-right Juntos por El Cambio coalition. Why did the ruling coalition select Massa, and what does that choice say about the Peronists’ strategy? Who has the best chance at representing the opposition? How could other candidates, such as libertarian economist Javier Milei, fare in the election?

No coalition could expect to remain in power amid triple-digit inflation and negative economic growth, much less in Latin America, where anti-incumbent sentiment is strong. In Argentina, public opinion is at its most negative in two decades. Not surprisingly, neither Argentina’s deeply unpopular president, Alberto Fernández, nor his deeply unpopular vice president, Cristina Kirchner, offered to represent Peronism in the election. By anointing Massa as the coalition’s unity candidate, however, Peronist pooh-bahs accomplished two important objectives: sidestepping a primary brawl in August and downplaying Kirchner’s most divisive and least electable wing of the coalition.
