Juan Ignacio Mondelli is head of the National Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Uruguay. Between 2019 and 2022, he was the Chief Regional Asylum Protection Officer (Refugee Status Determination) at UNHCR’s Office for the Americas in Panama. Between 2013 and 2019 he served as the Chief Regional Protection Officer for Statelessness at UNHCR’s Regional Legal Unit in Costa Rica.
Mondelli holds a law degree from the Faculty of Law at University of Buenos Aires (UBA), specializing in public international law and administrative law (2001). He obtained a master’s degree in human rights and civil liberties from Southwestern Law School, Los Angeles (2012), and a master’s degree in international relations, with a focus on international organizations from the Faculty of Law at University of Buenos Aires (UBA) (2018). He was a Fulbright – Siderman Scholar (2011-2012).
Mondelli has written several specialist articles on international refugee law, statelessness and nationality. He has lectured and facilitated various regional and national courses on nationality, statelessness, asylum, and migration.
