Member in the News: Xavier Becerra
Dialogue member Xavier Becerra delivered the Spanish-language response to President Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, February 5th. Becerra was tapped by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
The first Spanish-language response to the State of the Union was delivered in 2004 by then-New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. Richardson is also a member of the Inter-American Dialogue.
Becerra, the current attorney general of California, spent 24 years in Congress representing Los Angeles. He became the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, making him the highest-ranking Latino in Congress. Becerra joined the Dialogue as a member in 2007.
