Member in the News: Xavier Becerra

US President-elect Joe Biden has selected Xavier Becerra, attorney general for the state of California, as his nominee for secretary of health and human services, according to multiple news sources. A formal announcement from the Biden transition team is expected later this week.

Prior to his current role, Becerra served 12 terms in Congress as a member of the US House of Representatives. While in Congress, he was the first Latino to serve as a member of the Committee on Ways And Means, served as Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, and was Ranking Member of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security. Becerra also served one term in the California Legislature as the representative of the 59th Assembly District in Los Angeles County. He is a former deputy attorney general with the California Department of Justice.
