The Inter-American Dialogue mourns the loss of former president of Chile and Dialogue member, Sebastián Piñera. President Piñera passed away on February 6, 2024 at the age of 74. He served as president to Chile from 2010 to 2014 and 2018 to 2022.  

Piñera was a prominent figure in Chilean politics, a public servant, entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist. He was a founding member of Fundación Cultura y Sociedad, Fundación Mujer Emprende, and Fundación Avanza Chile. He taught courses in economics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, the University of Chile, and Adolfo Ibáñez University. 

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of two-term Chilean President and Inter-American Dialogue member Sebastián Piñera. His commitment to democratic governance and shared prosperity leaves an indelible mark on Chile’s political landscape,” said Dialogue president and CEO Rebecca Bill Chavez.  

President Piñera joined the Dialogue as a member in 2015.
