Cooperation with extra-regional partners will be fundamental as Latin American countries look to address economic and social challenges. The region relies not only on trade but also on investment in strategic infrastructure, industrial and capacity building initiatives, and other support from international partners, including certain foreign governments and multilateral development banks.
In this context, the United States and Japan are well positioned to be decisive actors. Both have committed to advancing the region’s economic development through recent policy initiatives and are now working to make good on key promises. In addition to their own independent engagements, there is also room for enhanced US-Japan partnership in Latin American, building on numerous shared interests and objectives. US-Japan ties are at an all-time high, boosting prospects for cross-institutional collaboration. At the same time, recent US-Japan partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region serve as useful models for trilateral collaboration with key partners in Latin America.

This event will address trends in Japanese policy and outreach toward the region, the intersection of US, Japanese, and Latin American interests, and prospects for enhanced cooperation among the US, Japan, and Latin American nations in frontier sectors, including energy transition and critical mineral supply.
