      Repetition in Uruguay

We are pleased to share with you PREAL’s Education Synopsis number 17, “Repetición y brechas de equidad: Análisis del caso de Uruguay” (in Spanish). The synopsis summarizes the key findings of a study published by Carlos Filgueira, Álvaro Fuentes, and Federico Rodríguez in PREAL’s book Education and Equity Gaps in Latin America (Volume II).

The study draws attention to the fact that grade repetition is high in Uruguay, and that it affects disproportionately students in the first two years of primary school and children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The study also analyzes Uruguay’s experience implementing policies to decrease first grade repetition and discusses the repetition phenomenon in the country and its consequences in terms of equity.
