Washington, DC – The Inter-American Dialogue is proud to announce the launch of its Abraham F. Lowenthal Public Policy Fellowships. Building on a four-decade history of fostering hemispheric collaboration, the Inter-American Dialogue will now carry forward the Abraham F. Lowenthal Public Policy Fellowships, a unique initiative that connects leading voices from Latin America and the Caribbean with Washington’s policy community. The Fellowships provide support for outstanding scholars, policymakers, and public intellectuals from the Americas, enabling them to spend three to six months in Washington, DC, conducting research, writing, and engaging with U.S. and regional policy professionals.
The Lowenthal Fellowships were established by the Wilson Center’s Latin American Program, then led by Dr. Cynthia Arnson, in recognition of its founding director, Abraham F. Lowenthal, who also co-founded the Inter-American Dialogue. For decades, Lowenthal has been a tireless advocate for strengthening inter-American cooperation through pluralist, respectful, and constructive policy engagement.
Since its creation, the fellowships have supported Alfredo Romero, a leading human rights advocate and director of Foro Penal in Caracas; Michael Penfold, a Venezuelan public intellectual and professor at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administración (IESA); and Francisco Sagasti, an international economist and former president of Peru.
“We are honored to carry forward Abe Lowenthal’s legacy and excited to provide a platform for emerging and established leaders to connect with our vibrant policy networks in Washington and throughout the hemisphere,” said Rebecca Bill Chavez, president and CEO of the Inter-American Dialogue.
By bringing the Lowenthal Fellowships into its portfolio, the Dialogue will connect future fellows with its dynamic networks of policy exchange and collaborative action to advance democratic resilience, shared prosperity, social inclusion, and sustainable development across the Americas.
Founded in 1982, the Inter-American Dialogue is the premier center for policy analysis, exchange, and communication on issues in Western Hemisphere affairs. Headquartered in Washington, DC, with a network of experts and fellows across the Americas, the Dialogue convenes global leaders and institutions to advance democratic governance, social equity, and sustainable development across the region.
