Washington, DC – Venezuelan opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia will deliver a special video address to open the Inter-American Dialogue’s IX Annual Leadership for the Americas Awards Gala on October 1, 2024, at the Organization of American States (OAS).

González Urrutia and Machado are at the forefront of the opposition’s efforts to restore democracy to Venezuela following decades of the abuse of power, the dismantling of democratic institutions, and widespread human rights violations.

“Democracy requires respecting the will of the people expressed through elections. By providing a platform for María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia at our Annual Leadership for the Americas Awards Gala, we are amplifying the voices of those who continue to fight for democracy in Venezuela. This moment is about standing in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and their aspirations for a democratic transition,” said Inter-American Dialogue President and CEO, Dr. Rebecca Bill Chavez.

The Inter-American Dialogue’s Annual Leadership for the Americas Awards Gala brings together diverse leaders from across the Americas whose exceptional contributions have been instrumental in addressing the region’s most pressing challenges.
