      Merit pay for teachers

      We are pleased to share with you an article published recently in Time magazine that reviews the experience of various districts in the United States which are experimenting with merit pay for teachers. The article has three main parts.

      The first presents the arguments for and against rewarding teachers’ performance in the classroom. The second part discusses the main reasons behind the success of some merit pay pilots and the failure of others. Finally, the third section reflects on the challenges of measuring teachers’ merit. The article suggests that while there is no magic formula to attract and retain good teachers, several promising experiences indicate that it is possible to tackle some of the main reasons why qualified teachers are leaving the profession
