We are pleased to share a recent article from TIME magazine analyzing the debate on adopting national learning standards in U.S. The article makes three points that are particularly interesting:

1) common standards are a prerequisite to successfully implementing other education reforms, including properly training, evaluating and rewarding teachers, assessing the success of innovations in education based on a common set of expectations, and identifying successful and unsuccessful schools; 2) standards should be comparable to those of other countries so as to show how globally competitive the country’s labor force is; and 3) standards should be developed by “reasonable educators and experts” rather than directly by the federal government.
