José Antonio Dos Santos Bedoya, Paraguay’s ambassador to the United States: “First and foremost, it is important to formally convey that there was never any intention to suspend cooperation agreements with the DEA. On the contrary, there is a clear need to further expand cooperation and good practices with Paraguayan police and security forces, particularly in the form of training and capacity building against transnational organized crime and drug-related criminal organizations, expertise that the DEA already provides. The situation unfolded because the DEA’s local counterparts in Paraguay considered that the current agreement, as it stood, had to be completed first in order to be able to modify and expand it, when that was not really the procedure. This has now been clarified. The fight against organized crime and drug trafficking is a priority for our government. We are very mindful of the scope of the task…”
