“The Brazilian Amazon has been suffering destruction by illegal fires, deforestation and mining, wildlife trafficking and drug trafficking, coupled with a high rate of violence and homicides, invasion of Indigenous and natural protection areas, and a growing presence of organized crime networks, both domestic and internationally connected. Factors that explain these alarming conditions include the difficulty of border control and the ease of relocation of illegal activities and markets, given the proximity of drug-producing countries and the extension of lands covered by dense vegetation. The area also has a rich and extensive watershed, as well as land-ownership instability, with constant territorial conflicts.
