What Do Municipal Election Results Mean for Brazil?

Ariel Goldstein, researcher at Conicet and professor in the department of political science at the University of Buenos Aires: “The municipal elections in Brazil have demonstrated the strength that the right retains in the country. In São Paulo, the results reflect an inclination that the city has shown on other occasions: a predominantly conservative population, with good economic income, which tends to prefer moderate options instead of radical figures. This helps explain why a candidate like Pablo Marçal, who is more aligned with Bolsonarism, did not reach the majority. Although these results are a setback for Lula’s government, it is the traditional right that emerges more strengthened, with Bolsonarism in a secondary role. This preference for less extreme profiles aligns with São Paulo’s historical tendency to opt for moderate figures, such as Geraldo Alckmin, Ricardo Nunes, Fernando Haddad or the late Bruno Covas, that are in line with the ‘tucanism’ of the PSDB, although the latter party…”
