What Does Gang Chaos in Haiti Mean for the DR?

  • The Dominican Republic announced on Oct. 2 that, every week, it will deport as many as 10,000 Haitians weekly who are living without authorization in the neighboring country. Dominican government spokesman Homero Figueroa said the country has seen an increase in migration from Haiti as an international mission has failed to gain the upper hand against the gangs that have increasingly taken control in Haiti. What does the chaos in Haiti mean for the Dominican Republic? What can, and should, the Dominican Republic be doing to help Haiti avoid collapse? Haiti is approaching collapse. It has no elected officials. The seven members of its newly inaugurated transitional government are often at odds with one another and with the prime minister they recently appointed. Mass unemployment and severe food shortages have spread throughout the country. Violent gangs have made life treacherous for most Haitians. And so far, the promise of international support to bolster the Haitian national police with a sizable contingent of external security forces remains largely unfulfilled. The DR’s plan to eject some 10,000 Haitians per week (yes, 500,000 per year) will surely…”
