Peter DeShazo, visiting professor of Latin American, Latino and Caribbean Studies at Dartmouth College and former U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs: “Although levels of crime remain low by Latin American standards, polling shows that public security is the number one concern of Chileans. A spate of high-profile murders in July exacerbated a longer-term upward trend in the homicide rate, cementing the public perception of a crime wave threatening citizen security. This translates into low approval ratings for President Boric and provides his opposition with political fodder in the runup to the Oct. 27 regional/municipal elections and beyond. Explaining an increase in crime is by nature difficult.
