Why Is Colombia’s Petro Pushing Health Care Reform?

  • Colombian President Gustavo Petro told members of the country’s Congress on July 20 that he will seek a health care reform that would put a government agency in charge of collecting billions of dollars’ worth of insurance fees. The move would reportedly reduce private insurers’ role in the country’s health sector. What are Petro’s most significant goals for health care reform, and why is he pushing them? How likely is Petro to win passage for his health care changes, given that Congress previously rejected his efforts at health care reform? How would the reforms affect Colombians, insurance companies and health care providers?

Shifting from a mixed to a predominantly public health care system presents significant implementation challenges, including logistical and administrative hurdles that will disrupt patient services, delay access to innovative treatments or interrupt vital screening services. The financial implications of such a major overhaul will lead to a strain on the national budget, raising concerns about the sustainability of funding for health care in the expanded public health system.
