How Will Mexicans in the U.S. Affect Mexico’s Election?

More Mexicans living in the United States will be able to vote in Mexico’s upcoming presidential elections in June than ever before, due to a new online option on cellular phones and an initiative that will allow for people to vote in person at certain consulates. Currently, more than 630,000 Mexicans living abroad are eligible to vote, with about 240,000 people obtaining voter IDs from the Dallas and Houston consulates alone, according to the Texas Tribune. How much of an impact will these voters have in the election? What are their concerns as compared to those of voters still living in Mexico, and who are Mexicans abroad most likely to vote for? How will Mexican politics need to take an increasingly expatriated citizenry into account in the future?

Tony Payan, director and fellow of the Mexico Center at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy: “Ever since the Mexican government passed legislation guaranteeing Mexicans living abroad the right to vote, there has been interest in doing so by the country’s diaspora. But as Mexico becomes more politically polarized, and considering that the 2006 election—the first Mexicans voters abroad could participate in—was as close as 244,000 votes, it is possible that Mexicans abroad could tip the balance.
