Will a New Snack Food Tax Improve Colombians’ Health?

Shu Wen Ng, professor and distinguished scholar of public health nutrition at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and fellow at the Carolina Population Center: “The new set of taxes in Colombia, which also include a single-use plastics tax, seeks to correct some of the negative externalities on human and planetary health resulting from the production and sales of ultra-processed prepackaged foods and drinks in the country. With the design of these taxes, the ultra-processed food and beverage industry will likely seek to minimize their tax liability by reducing the amount of added sugar, added sodium and added saturated fats in their products. There may also be changes in package sizes offered, which will differ for taxable beverages vs. taxable foods given the tax designs (specific vs. ad valorem, respectively), so the net dietary and health implications are not totally clear and would need…”
