Can Argentina’s Milei Close the Central Bank?

It would indeed require congressional authorization—difficult to achieve in the opposition-dominated legislature—even in the unlikely scenario of Milei putting the controversial proposal to a vote. The truism that governing is different from campaigning is likely to apply to both Milei’s dollarization plan and his promise to close the central bank. While he is well-intentioned in trying to prevent future politicians from printing money to fund the fiscal deficit and hence fueling inflation, most mainstream Argentine economists do not recommend…”
