Andrés Rozental, member of the Advisor board, president of Rozental & Asociados and former deputy minister of foreign affairs of Mexico: “The ‘summit’ that Mexico’s president hosted on migration challenges any explanation of the rationale behind the gathering. To begin with, the heads of state invited come from countries that are all sources of migration, some mainly for economic reasons and others involving people fleeing from civil strife, gang violence or political persecution. In addition, most of the leaders who attended are autocrats or undemocratic. Regional countries that receive primarily transit or destination flows weren’t included, nor was the United States, the main recipient objective of almost all migrants originating in the region. The final communiqué was, as usual with this type of gathering, a collection of platitudes, unrealizable goals and commitments to collaborate that never really materialize.
