Should he win, his Nuevas Ideas party will further consolidate control over all aspects of the Salvadoran state. No other party, not even FMLN or ARENA, is close to having Bukele’s level of public support; what’s more, over the past two years neither of those traditional parties underwent the kind of reforms necessary to position themselves again as legitimate alternatives. There are some examples from other countries where the opposition created coalitions of political actors who temporarily set aside their differences and joined forces to maximize the chance of ousting entrenched leaders.
