Stephanie Brewer, director for Mexico at the Washington Office on Latin America: “Mexico’s 2024 election will largely be a referendum on how the population views current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his self-proclaimed ‘Fourth Transformation.’ The president’s supporters are likely to vote for Claudia Sheinbaum, widely seen as his preferred successor and now confirmed as Morena’s presidential candidate. A cornerstone of her campaign will be pledging the continuation of Fourth Transformation policies, citing indicators of reductions in poverty, among others. Meanwhile, the opposition coalition brings together parties that have traditionally presented themselves as rivals with differing ideologies but have united with the goal of defeating Morena. Their candidate, Xóchitl Gálvez (a senator and businesswoman of Indigenous roots), is thought to have the potential to attract some of Morena’s base, given her story as someone of humble origins and her outspoken, down-to-earth communication style.
