The political environment is dense, with extremes becoming ever more present. It is against this backdrop that the government of President Boric announced the ‘National Plan for the Search for Truth and Justice,’ an initiative that must be wholeheartedly supported. The announcement, however, does not seem to have changed the tone of the conversation, nor is it likely that a consensus will be reached on the historic event that took place a half century ago today. Agreeing to ‘nunca más’ regarding human rights violations is an ethical imperative, but it should not invalidate a frank debate about our past and extreme political climates that undermine democracy. The last constitutional process, supported by the government, was an institutional solution to a social crisis marked by violence.
