How Are U.S. Ties With Latin American Countries Evolving?

  • U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and a group of fellow progressive Democrats visited South America last week. The lawmakers and staff met with officials and civil society groups in Brazil, Chile and Colombia, three of the region’s largest leftist-ruled democracies. What did the group aim to achieve on the trip? How have U.S. ties with the region evolved since U.S. President Joe Biden took office in 2021, and how might the congressional trip challenge the Biden administration’s policy in the region?

Unfortunately, the void left by the Biden administration in Latin America and the Caribbean continues to enable anti-American governments like China, Russia and Iran to set a foothold in our region. Nations in our hemisphere are realizing that, under the Biden administration, with the encouragement of progressives, it is easier to work with anti-American regimes than the American government…”
