This all culminated in a process that enabled Bukele’s candidacy for re-election. These are clear indicators of a break with constitutional order and democratic principles. Perhaps a positive to emerge from this is that the traditional parties, ARENA and FMLN, seem to be losing even more relevancy and that an opposition based on broad citizen and social alliances will emerge. This is under development, and the candidacy of former military officer and lawyer Luis Parada, and human rights expert Celia Medrano might be a first step. Winning the presidency next February is unrealistic, it’s more about putting a strong opposition on the map and possibly breaking the supermajority in the Legislative Assembly.
