Martinelli has been dodging legal accountability since he left the presidency in 2014. While the conviction marks an important step toward improving transparency and accountability, Panama’s judicial system remains notoriously slow and bureaucratic. Since the appeal process will most certainly not conclude before the May 2024 presidential election, Martinelli will be able to continue his quest to return to the presidency.
