Catalina Crespo-Sancho, Costa Rica’s ambassador to the United States: “Costa Rica has traditionally been a host country for thousands of people fleeing social and political conflicts or seeking a better future for themselves and their families. Since 2018, the country has received approximately 250,000 refugee applications, mainly from Nicaragua, Venezuela and Colombia. The migration issue requires a shared responsibility and a collaborative approach among countries. Together with the United States, Costa Rica established a temporary safe mobility office in the northern border area of the country. The office will serve as a processing center for refugee applicants from Venezuela and Nicaragua who have been in the country before June 12, 2023. The safe mobility office will allow refugees to apply for legal ways to migrate to the United States and other countries such as a Spain and Canada. However…”
