This is totally outside the rules of Mexico’s electoral law and the constitution. Calling a presidential contest by any other name is likely to bring judicial lawsuits and may eventually end up in the electoral court. In the meantime, however, the country’s media has been dominated by the four ‘official’ Morena aspirants and whether Claudia Sheinbaum or Marcelo Ebrard will prevail. So far, indications from President López Obrador—who has promised to keep out of his movement’s internal contest—are that he favors Mexico City’s former mayor.
