Christopher Mitchell, emeritus professor of politics at New York University: “President Luis Abinader’s administration has launched at least five major anti-corruption prosecutions since 2020, but these indictments have tended to stagnate, without speedy trials or guilty pleas. As the 2020 presidential nominee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Gonzalo Castillo is the most politically conspicuous defendant yet arrested. Along with two additional former cabinet ministers and others, Castillo is charged with receiving $345 million in illicit gains, through alleged schemes including illegitimate asphalt purchases for public-works projects. Castillo has shown only a modest personal political following; his presidential nomination was largely owing to the sponsorship of then-President Danilo Medina.
