This is, of course, controversial due to the constitution’s prohibition of consecutive re-election. That said, the matter seems to be less controversial for Salvadoran voters, who overwhelmingly support Bukele’s presidency. The reduction in homicides has played a significant role in his continuing popularity. For two decades, crime and the economy have been the two issues that Salvadoran voters are most concerned about. At present, he’s delivered on one of those—at least temporarily. That means that his approval ratings remain high even when other policies, such as Bitcoin, are less popular.
