Laura Gómez-Mera, associate professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Miami: “While Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is unlikely to end up in prison in the short or medium term, the conviction may have important political repercussions. Although her levels of approval have deteriorated recently, the vice president may take advantage of her judicial misfortunes to reinvigorate support among her most loyal followers. This, and many of her claims of political persecution and ‘lawfare’ against her will deepen the polarization in Argentine politics at a time of deepening economic malaise. Perhaps more interestingly, the conviction will influence the political landscape both within Peronism and within the fractured opposition.
