Rodrigues, associate professor of international relations at the Federal University of ABC in Brazil: “There was a significant increase in the Bolsonarist caucus in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, and the president managed to elect some of his main supporters, both more and less radical, to Congress. The massive and indiscriminate use of social media—a factor that the ultra-right knows how to masterfully manipulate—and the illegal use of the federal government’s structure to support their candidates boosted the victory of many of them. Nevertheless, the left increased its congressional seats in relation to the 2018 election and, for the first time, Indigenous and transgender representatives were elected, reinforcing the defense of progressive agendas. The most damaged were the centrist candidates, reduced by the strong polarization of the ballot.
