Will a New Plan Help Chile Raise Investment Levels?

Kathleen C. Barclay, director of AmCham Chile: “Twenty-eight measures to promote investment were announced in response to a probable recession in 2023. The plan involves tax stimulus for private investment, enhanced access to financing, public-sector focus on public infrastructure investment, an emphasis on attracting foreign investment, an improved efficiency in applying regulations and obtaining permits, and public-private partnerships to promote investment. The most important of these measures include transitory use of accelerated depreciation, an ad-valorem tax holiday of five years for new copper projects or expansions, tax breaks for small businesses and government-backed support for mortgage financing. The expectation is a 5 percent increase in investment for 2023, generating between 50,000 and 70,000 new jobs. The measures aim to promote investment in construction, infrastructure, mining and small business. Overall, expect improvements in short-term investment.
