How Well Is Ecuador Handling Migration From Venezuela?

Betilde Muñoz-Pogossian, director of the Department of Social Inclusion at the Organization of American States: “The regularization process recently undertaken by Ecuador responds to the increases in migration rates to the country, especially of Venezuelan migrants and refugees, and the fact that normal regularization processes are no longer sufficient to regularize the totality of this population. The measure that the current Ecuadorean administration approved is a good step, and it can be added to the very solidary, innovative and pragmatic responses that we have seen coming from the Latin American region to receive and integrate Venezuelan migrants and refugees. One of the key aspects of this regularization process is that it will allow migrants and refugees to register and obtain an identification document, something that had been out of reach for so many Venezuelans.
