Why Has Chile’s New President Had Such a Short Honeymoon?

Jorge Heine, research professor at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University and former Cabinet minister in the Chilean government: “With a ruling coalition that had never been in power, an inexperienced Cabinet, no majority in Parliament and an ambitious program, it was always going to be an uphill battle for Chile’s new government. But even so, President Boric’s remarkably short honeymoon period and his sudden drop from grace—in a manner not seen since 1990—has been surprising. It makes observers wonder how (and if) the large number of reforms promised to the electorate will be enacted. Why is this happening? The Constitutional Convention, closely associated with the ruling coalition, has been a disappointment, coming up with an overlong, rambling text and highly controversial measures, like eliminating the Senate. Several polls have raised the possibility that the new constitutional text will be rejected in the September 4 plebiscite…”
