The new makeup will be key in determining the next president’s maneuvering capacity. These elections will be marked by social unrest, the economic crisis and the unfavorability of government institutions—Congress in particular, with a disapproval rate of 82 percent—and political parties, which have a disapproval rate of 84 percent. According to the latest Invamer poll, Colombians are increasingly pessimistic, as 85 percent of them believe the country is going in the wrong direction, 96 percent believe the cost of living is worsening, 93 percent believe the country is less secure, and 93 percent believe that corruption is getting worse. Taking this into account, significant changes are expected in the makeup of Congress which, as of now, is unlikely to yield majorities for any given political bloc. However, new members of Congress, including social media influencers, youth and activists, as well as 16 seats in the lower house for victims, promise that discussions in Colombia’s Congress will focus more heavily on land reform, the extractive sector and redistributive tax reform than in years past.
