Higher education institutions in Latin America are at a pivotal moment in their digital transformation. As new technologies—especially artificial intelligence—reshape educational models, universities face both unprecedented opportunities and complex challenges. Adapting to this changing landscape requires more than just technology; it demands new capacities, flexible models, and collaboration across the system.
To navigate this transition effectively, they require strategic support, peer learning, and stronger alignment between innovation and institutional goals. Through our work, the Inter-American Dialogue has been supporting universities and other key actors as they navigate this transition: convening a regional working group on AI in higher education, rethinking the role of credentials in a more dynamic learning landscape, and promoting the digital skills that students and educators need to thrive.
