Andrés Martínez-Fernández, senior analyst for Latin America at FrontierView: “The majority of Colombians seem to agree that the country’s pension system needs change, a stance that is unsurprising given the inequality and limitations in coverage that characterize the current system. However, an overwhelming majority also want to preserve freedom of choice within the pension system, something that the Petro administration’s proposal would greatly limit. As it stands, the reform proposal would substantially increase the government’s fiscal burdens from the pension system, making the public system the primary player. Shifting funds away from Colombia’s private funds, which are the second-largest holders of public internal debt in the country, also presents risks to public finances.
