William H. Duncan was sworn in as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of El Salvador on January 24, 2023.

A career member of the Foreign Service holding the rank of Minister Counselor, Ambassador Duncan served as consul general in Monterrey, deputy chief of mission in Mexico City, director of the Office of Andean Affairs in the Department of State’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, and deputy chief of Mission in Asunción. Other overseas assignments included Madrid, Baghdad, Bogotá, San Salvador, and Matamoros. His Washington assignments included the Office of Mexican Affairs, Office of East African Affairs, and Office of Central American Affairs as well as the Department of State Operations Center.

Born in Louisiana, Ambassador Duncan grew up in Arkansas and received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Arkansas. Before joining the Foreign Service in 1992, he served as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy and as an attorney with the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Duncan was an event speaker at the Dialogue.
