Richard M. Sanders is senior fellow for the Western Hemisphere at the Center for the National Interest. A former member of the U.S. Department of State’s Senior Foreign Service, Sanders writes and consults on international affairs with a focus on Latin America and Canada. He served as foreign policy advisor to U.S. Army Chief of Staff General Mark A. Milley (2016–2018), Chargé d’Affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa (2013–2016), and Director of the State Department’s Office of Brazilian and Southern Cone Affairs (2010–2013). He has also held senior diplomatic postings in Caracas, Bogotá, Managua, and Madrid. His writing has appeared in The National Interest, World Politics Review, and other outlets. He holds a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. from Trent University.
