Actualmente es jefe de la división de educacion general del Ministerio de Educación de Chile. Fue cofundador y director ejecutivo de la Fundación Impulso Docente. Trabajó como profesor de biología en el Centro Educacional Américo Vespucio de Peñalolén y como director de liderazgo docente en la organización mundial Teach For All. 

Larraín es bioquímico y profesor de enseñanza media con mención en biología. Tiene un master en educación de teacherscollege, Universidad de Columbia.

Larraín participó como panelista en un evento del Diálogo Interamericano.
