Pedro Salazar Ugarte is a legal scholar and professor specializing in constitutional theory, democracy, and human rights. He holds a law degree from ITAM and a PhD in political philosophy from the University of Turin, Italy. He is a full-time researcher and currently serves as director of the Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas (IIJ) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he also teaches at the Faculty of Law. He is a Level III member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers.
Salazar has taught in doctoral and graduate programs across Mexico and has served as a visiting professor in Italy and Spain. He is a member of the Latin American Constitutional Theory Seminar (SELA), hosted by Yale University, and has conducted research stays in Italy and Argentina. He regularly lectures throughout Latin America, the United States, and Europe.
He has held leadership roles at UNAM and contributes to advisory bodies including CONAPRED, the Institute for Democratic Transition (IETD), and UNAM’s Social Sciences Council. His publications include Derecho y poder (2013), Crítica de la mano dura (2012), and La democracia constitucional (2006), among others. He is a columnist for El Universal and Nexos and has hosted television programs on TV UNAM, Canal 11, and the Judicial Channel.
