Martha Doggett is the former director of the Americas Division of the UN Department of Political Affairs. Doggett began her career as a journalist and editor, working for the North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA). She joined the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights (now Human Rights First) in 1988, publishing three books on El Salvador. She began work for the UN in the United Nations Mission in El Salvador (MINUSAL) before moving to the United Nations Support Mission in Haiti (UNSMIH). She became a senior political affairs officer in the Americas team of the United Nations Department of Political Affairs in 2000. In December 2006 she was appointed to head the Americas Division, a post she held until November 2017. Both in the UN and in the non-governmental world, she has focused on human rights issues: truth commissions, reconciliation, the human rights aspects of peacekeeping and the administration of justice. Doggett led the multi-disciplinary team that designed the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG). 

Doggett has a degree in the Humanities and did graduate studies in French and Political Science at Roskilde University, Denmark. She obtained her Master of Journalism from Boston University.
