Mark Coolidge Johnson is a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serving as Chargé d’Affaires, ad interim, and Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Mission Mexico. Since July 2023, he has led coordination among 40 agencies and 3,500 staff, advancing key U.S. priorities with Mexico in areas such as security—particularly efforts to counter fentanyl trafficking—migration, and trade.
Before his assignment to Mexico, Johnson served as Deputy Executive Secretary in the Office of the Secretary of State (2021–2023), where he oversaw internal coordination across regional and functional bureaus and managed the Department’s 24/7 Operations Center responsible for crisis response and global monitoring. He regularly briefed senior leadership, ensuring alignment with international partners.
Johnson brings deep regional experience in the Americas. As Director of Andean Affairs (2019–2021), he led U.S. policy toward Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. While Deputy Chief of Mission in San Salvador (2016–2019), he directed strategic initiatives to address irregular migration, promote transparency and development, and combat drug trafficking. Earlier, he served as Spokesman at U.S. Embassy Mexico City, where he led interagency communications strategies on security and migration.
His broader diplomatic experience includes roles in Jerusalem, London, and Sofia, where he focused on economic policy, counter-terrorist finance, and trade. He has also served in Washington on the Secretary of State’s Executive Secretariat Staff and held overseas posts in Spain, Guatemala, and Argentina. Johnson joined the Department of State in 1993 and has served across four continents.
