Laritza Diversent is a Cuban human rights lawyer and pro-democracy activist. In 2010, Diversent founded Cubalex in Havana, a nonprofit organization specializing in providing legal assistance to victims of human rights violations.
She has presented cases to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the UN Human Rights System. She was one of the civil society activists who met with President Obama during his historic visit to Cuba in 2016. That same year the Cuban regime raided the offices of Cubalex, imprisoned one of its lawyers, and opened an investigation against Diversent and her staff for “illegal activities.” In 2017, Diversent and her team were forced into exile in the United States to avoid further repression. She currently lives in the United States and continues her pro-democracy work in Cuba.
Diversent holds a law degree from the University of Havana and a master of laws in human rights and humanitarian law from the American University Washington College of Law.
Diversent was an event speaker at the Dialogue.
