Eugenio Díaz-Bonilla

Argentina | Special Advisor, Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA)

Eugenio Díaz-Bonilla is a special advisor to the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). He originally joined the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in 2012 and was named head of the Latin America and Caribbean Program in 2017.

Díaz-Bonilla has more than forty years of professional experience working on development and poverty issues through grassroots work, academic activities, consulting, and positions of institutional leadership in international organizations and governments. He has resided and worked in various Latin American and Caribbean countries for extended periods and has acted as a consultant and staff member with several international organizations, including IICA, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Organization of American States (OAS), and the World Bank.

He has extensive experience as an advisor and consultant to governments in developing countries on macroeconomic and trade policies, poverty alleviation, and food security programs. Additionally, he has been deeply involved in project preparation, financing, and implementation, primarily regarding agricultural and rural development operations. As a senior diplomat for Argentina, he led diplomatic and negotiating activities focusing on agricultural trade issues in bilateral, regional, and multilateral negotiations. Díaz-Bonilla served as a member of the board of executive directors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for almost nine years and held leadership positions as chairman and vice chairman of several board committees responsible for the bank’s governance. In 2017, he was elected a corresponding member of the National Academy of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine of Argentina.
