Alfonso Prat-Gay served as Minister of Treasury and Finance of Argentina (2015–16), National Deputy in Congress (2009–13), and President of the Central Bank of Argentina (2002–4). As Finance Minister, he removed capital controls, normalized the National Statistics Institute, ended ten years of sovereign default, and designed a record-breaking tax amnesty that formalized assets and savings worth 20% of GDP, earning him the 2016 Euromoney Finance Minister of the Year Award. Previously, appointed as President of the Central Bank at the age of 37, he reduced inflation from 40% to 4% while maintaining 8% economic growth, winning the 2004 Euromoney Central Bank Governor of the Year Award. During his term in Congress representing the city of Buenos Aires, he spearheaded legislation focused on banking security, the prevention of money laundering and drug trafficking, and the extensive deregulation of the Argentine financial system. He holds an MA in Economics (1994) and is a PhD candidate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from the Universidad Católica Argentina in 1988, graduating summa cum laude. His academic background includes extensive teaching experience: he served as a visiting professor of finance at the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán, an assistant professor of finance at Torcuato Di Tella University (2005–8), an assistant professor of economics at the Universidad Católica Argentina (1988–92), and a teaching assistant at the University of Pennsylvania (1993). In the private sector, shortly after his postgraduate studies, he joined JPMorgan in New York and subsequently worked in its Buenos Aires and London branches until 2001. Upon returning to Buenos Aires, he co-founded the economic consulting firm APL Economía.
Prat-Gay joined the Dialogue as a Member in 2010. He currently serves of the Dialogue’s Board of Directors.
