Four months after the opposition’s resounding victory in the parliamentary elections, the economic and political crises in Venezuela have become more acute. The government of President Nicolás Maduro –which still controls key state institutions including the judiciary– is resisting major initiatives of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, including an amnesty law to release political prisoners and a referendum to revoke Maduro’s term and call for new elections. Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis caused by the collapse of the Venezuelan economy is deepening. In a context of shortages and with most analysts expecting an imminent default, the government just decreed a reduction of the workweek to save electricity. Political gridlock and economic disaster are pushing the country to a breaking point.

To assess the current crisis and share some thoughts on possible political and economic scenarios, the Dialogue is pleased to welcome Luis Vicente León, the president of Datanálisis and one of Venezuela’s most respected political observers.
